Dr John PY Yam's Profile


Dr John Yam received his medical training from the National University of Singapore. After his internship & clinical rotations in surgery & neonatology, he received his postgraduate training in obstetrics & gynaecology at the National University Hospital & KK Women’s & Children’s Hospital, Singapore.

He is a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (London) (MRCOG), a fellow of the Academy of Medicine (Singapore), a fellow of the Chapter of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (Singapore) & a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons (USA).

Besides lecturing medical undergraduates at the National University of Singapore, Dr Yam has published numerous articles in scientific journals & has contributed to many books on obstetrics & gynaecology. He has contributed articles & book chapters spanning topics such as: minimally invasive surgical techniques, vaginal hysterectomy, intrapartum fetal surveillance, gestational diabetes, & the management of gynaecological emergencies.

He is also currently assistant professor at the Duke University (USA) – NUS Graduate Medical School.

He was formerly clinical tutor in the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore, from 2000-2006.

Dr Yam has been a Trainer for the yearly Regional MRCOG Part II examination course, Singapore, from 2003 to the present. He was also an examiner for the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Clinical Performance Examination (2012)

Dr Yam’s many interests include: minimally invasive gynaecological surgery (keyhole & conventional methods for gynaecological conditions) & pregnancy care (particularly monitoring of the mother & her foetus during labour & delivery). His laparoscopic & hysteroscopic repertoire runs the gamut of simple to complex conditions, including:
  • diagnostic & therapeutic hysteroscopy
  • hysteroscopic endometrial ablation
  • hysteroscopic polypectomy & myomectomy
  • hysteroscopic treatment of Asherman’s Syndrome (hysteroscopic adhesiolysis)
  • diagnostic & therapeutic laparoscopy
  • laparoscopic sterilization
  • laparoscopic ovarian drilling
  • laparoscopic treatment of ectopic pregnancy
  • laparoscopic adhesiolysis & treatment of endometriosis
  • laparoscopic myomectomy
  • laparoscopic cystectomy
  • laparoscopic hysterectomy
With regard to obstetrics, Dr Yam has done extensive research in the field of intrapartum foetal surveillance, publishing widely about both conventional (cardiotocography) & alternative (fetal pulse oximetry, lactate measurements) means of fetal monitoring in labour. His work in the field of fetal monitoring has been cited in William’s Obstetrics, a premier international reference textbook on obstetrics.

Dr Yam gives frequent public talks & lectures in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia & the Southeast Asian region. His talks cover topics such as: pregnancy care, fibroid & ovarian cyst treatment, minimally invasive surgery, menopause issues & urogynaecology.

He has received accolades from both patients & the hospital administration for his clinical service standards, including the Excellent Service Award 2005 (for outstanding contribution & commitment to excellent service) – KK Women’s & Children’s Hospital-EXSA Singapore (an award given by SPRING Singapore), & the Service From the Heart Exemplary Award 2005-2006 – KK Women’s & Children’s Hospital.

In 2012, he received the Faculty Appreciation Award for Outstanding O & G Leadership, as voted by the graduating class of 2014, Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School.

Dr Yam is currently based at Gleneagles Hospital, Singapore.

Dr Yam firmly believes in a dynamic mobile approach to obstetric & gynaecological care. Whilst recognizing the need to constantly keep up with state-of-the-art practice, he also enjoys the excitement of a multicentred multi-disciplinary approach to patient care
