My first pregnancy was very smooth and easy. I’m now expecting my second child, and I am suffering from very unbearable morning sickness. Is there anything I should be worried about?

Every pregnancy is different – sometimes morning sickness is more severe in the first pregnancy and is less evident or absent in the next, and sometimes it is the other way around. There is no need to be worried.

If you find you can’t hold down your food or drink at all, or completely lose your appetite, do consult your obstetrician.

I have heard that pregnant women are more prone to haemorrhoids. Why is this so?

There are a number of reasons why pregnancy piles affect moms-to-be:
  • More blood circulates around your body during pregnancy making all your veins a little more dilated. Unfortunately, that means the delicate veins around the anus may get sluggish and swollen too, especially when your ever-growing uterus is putting extra pressure on them.
  • Straining in the washroom is a common cause; so, if like many moms-to-be, you are constipated, eating extra fibre and drinking lots of water should help your haemorrhoids.
If you are suffering from piles, do consult your doctor for medication and treatment.

I am a vegetarian and I recently found out that I’m pregnant. If I continue on a vegetarian diet, will my child be getting enough nutrients for his growth and development?

With careful planning, a vegetarian diet during pregnancy can provide all the necessary vitamins, minerals, protein and other nutrients you need for a healthy pregnancy. Make sure you include protein-rich food in your diet such as beans and tofu as these are vital for your baby’s growth. You should also consider supplementing your diet with a well-balanced maternal milk to make sure you are receiving all the required nutrients during the course of your pregnancy.
